Mt. Bromo sunrise trekking, Ijen Volcano and crater lake
Day 1: Bromo Sunrise Tour Early morning (03.00 AM) leaving from cottage hotel at Tosari (01.00 AM if leaving from hotel at Malang), breakfast during the journey (by jeep); Sunrise trekking at Mt. Bromo, one of Indonesia's most beautiful volcanoes with most beautiful panoramic view. Mount Bromo is an active volcano (2329 m) and the name derived from Javanese pronunciation of Brahma (the Hindu creator god). Mount Bromo sits in the middle of a plain called the "Sea of Sand". After visiting Mt. Bromo from Mt. Penanjakan (2770 m) view point, climb down to sand sea of the foot of Bromo mountain (by jeep); after that climb up (trekking or horse riding) till the main crater; back to the cottage hotel in Tosari.
Day 2: Bromo - Ijen Breakfast at hotel; 6-hour drive to Banyuwangi, and check-in homestay at Sempol, Ijen
Day 3: Ijen Crater Trekking Early morning (04.00 AM) leaving from homestay, breakfast during the journey (1-hour drive by jeep); Start trekking from Paltuding Post, 2-hour trekking until Ijen Crater, Ijen is a group of composite volcanoes, Mt. Merapi is the highest point of that complex. The colorful, acidic crater lake is one of the main attraction. This lake is recognised as the largest and highly acidic (pH 0.13 in the middle) crater lake in the world. It is also a source for the river Banyupahit, resulting in highly acidic and metal-enriched river water which has a significant detrimental effect on the downstream river ecosystem. This lake is a site of a labour-intensive sulfur mining operation, in which sulfur-laden baskets are carried by hand from the crater floor. The work is paid well and workers earn around USD 6-9 /per day, once the worker out of the crater, still need to carry their loads of sulfur chunks 3 km to the nearby Paltuding Valley to get paid; back to hotel
